Digital Mirror currently supports Gmail and select versions of Microsoft Outlook. If you are a Microsoft Outlook user, Digital Mirror requires Microsoft Outlook 2002, 2003, 2007, or 2010 (32-bit)* to be installed.
* While Digital Mirror should work with the 32-bit version of Outlook 2010, please be aware that this new version has not been tested as thoroughly as the other supported versions of Outlook. Digital Mirror will not currently work with the 64-bit version of Outlook 2010.

Digital Mirror relies on getting mail from Google using the IMAP protocol, and is subject to Google's restrictions on the usage of IMAP (bandwidth limits, etc.).

To the best of our knowledge, Gmail currently has a fairly generous daily download limit. Given that Digital Mirror does not download the attachments in your emails, which generally account for a significant amount of space, it is fairly unlikely the usage limits will present a problem. In the unlikely event that the amount of your email exceeds the daily download limits, your data will be partially downloaded into Digital Mirror. In subsequent runs, assuming a minimum of a 24-hour interval between Digital Mirror runs, the remaining emails will be downloaded in one or more additional batches.

Yes, in our experience, you can always access your Gmail account via Gmail's web interface (mail.google.com/mail). Please refer to the next question and answer with respect to accessing your Gmail account via third party software (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird).

In our experience, you can always access your Gmail account via Gmail's web interface (mail.google.com/mail). If you exceed Gmail's generous daily download limit and access your Gmail account with third party software (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird), you will be unable to log in to Gmail with third party software for up to 24 hours.

The message count you get from Digital Mirror might differ from what you expect. This could happen for one or more of the following reasons:
  • Digital Mirror keeps track of your Outlook contacts and events, and counts them along with email messages. This would cause the total number of messages processed by Digital Mirror to be higher than you expect.
  • In Outlook, Digital Mirror only accesses local messages. If a new message has been received, but not fully downloaded to your computer, Digital Mirror will skip this message when processing. This would cause the total number of messages processed by Digital Mirror to be lower than you expect.
  • Digital Mirror does not process messages that you, your email client, or your internet service provider marked as junk mail, or 'spam'. This would cause the total number of messages processed by Digital Mirror to be lower than you expect.
  • Digital Mirror does not process messages that have been marked for deletion. This would cause the total number of messages processed by Digital Mirror to be lower than you expect.
  • Sometimes Digital Mirror may be interrupted while it is downloading emails. It will process the emails it has downloaded, but when you run Digital Mirror again, it will download the remaining emails that were not downloaded from the previous run. Under these circumstances, it may download more messages than you are expecting.

If Digital Mirror closes unexpectedly (including being shut down from the Windows Task Manager), Outlook may display a message about being unable to display a folder. Outlook does this to protect your data. To clear the message and open your folder, simply shut down Outlook and start it again.

Digital Mirror collects certain statistics that are anonymous and include no personal information. You can choose to prevent those statistics from being sent back to Cataphora, if you wish.

Data Digital Mirror collects:
  • General information about your computer, such as what operating system you are using, the type of processor the system is running on, and how much memory and disk are available.
  • Information about Digital Mirror processing, such as how long it took.
  • Statistical data about the email messages that were processed, such as number of emails and number of attachments.
  • Numbers of email messages that contained the various tones of language that Digital Mirror detects, such as anger, problems, and confusion.
  • Language identification statistics, such as how many messages were recognized as being in various languages. (Because Digital Mirror analyzes language, it is important for it to be able to check that it is being run against data in a supported language.)
  • Statistics about each visualization, such as the length of time for which data was found, how many relevant topics and individuals were recognized, and any gaps resulting from periods during which no data relevant to the visualization was found.
Digital Mirror does not collect IP addresses, email addresses, or any content from your email folders.

You can view the kind of data that is reported in this sample statistical data file (to view, set your text viewer to word wrap).

If you are running Digital Mirror on personal data, please note that this version is optimized for analysis of data in a work or other organizational context. For personal data, it is possible that you may find some of the results less interesting or relevant.

Even if that is not the case, people are sometimes puzzled by the results Digital Mirror presents. But these results are firmly based on the data: if you see something unexpected, it is likely to be because your data suggests something different than your perception. We strongly recommend that you look into the data yourself. In many cases, you can do this by clicking on the specific result in the visualization to bring up an evidence panel that shows some examples that led to the conclusion. In our experience, in the vast majority of cases, the data will support the Digital Mirror result. The challenge is to see yourself as Digital Mirror and others see you. If you have tried and still believe the result is wrong, please let us know.
